Direct Marketing Update | Nobody knows direct marketing better!

USPS lost billions in 2010, and 2009, and $450 million in January alone.

It owes $5.5 billion by September for future medical benefits and $1.3 billion for worker’s compensation by November.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe says they’ll run out of money if Congress doesn’t act.

He said the mail would go through, but they’d stiff us to do it. Revenues are down…Mail volume is down.

This means 2 things:

  1. Maybe Uncle Sam shouldn’t mail my letter
  2. And surely someone else can do it better

Bureaucracy never works efficiently, or in response to the market.

The U.S. Postal Monopoly announced plans to hike postage rates again on several different types of mail in April. The good news? The cost of sending a Mother’s Day card in May will stay the same.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • For larger envelopes, the cost of the first ounce remains at 44 cents, but the cost of each additional ounce will increase from 17 cents to 20 cents.
  • Rates on postcards will increaseby 1 penny to 29 cents.
  • Letters to Canada and Mexico will increase to 80 cents from 75 cents and 79 cents respectively.
  • Letters to other international destinations will remain unchanged at 98 cents.
  • Express Mail and Priority Mail prices will not be affected.
  • A variety of price increases for other mailing services will go into effect, including advertising mail, periodicals and packages. Details can be found here.

Over the years, I’ve written about the negative effects of the postal monopoly laws and the quasi-government nature of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

These laws have harmed direct mailers, shippers, taxpayers and ultimately consumers.

Besides the Postal Service’s inefficiencies…its bloated, overexpansive bureaucracy…and its powerful union…the postal system is killing mailers with its frequent rate hikes. And it’s losing mail volume and revenue in the process.

Attention high-volume mailers: The U.S. Postal Service will once again offer you a 30% rebate!

If you mailed at least 350,000 standard mail letters and flats between July 1 and September 1, 2009, you’ll be receiving an invitation from the USPS to take part in this year’s summer sale.

To earn a rebate, you must increase your mail volume at least 5% above your 2009 threshold.

The good news is that the United States Postal Service (USPS) handled an estimated 16 billion pieces of mail in the month of December—the busiest month of the year.

The bad news is, that estimate is 4 billion short of last year’s 20-billion-piece estimate.
